Grandma Aston’s Scottish Scones Recipe

This is a homemade Scottish Scones recipe from Mary Hannnah Aston (nee Pugsley), Nana’s Grandmother. You can see Mary Hannah in the below photo that was taken for the family Christmas Card (c 1912). She is in the center holding an infant. Nana’s mother Harriet is located in the back row, back right corner. The Aston’s lived in Wales, UK and the recipe is dated circa 1898.

Grandma Aston’s Scottish Scones Recipe

Ingredients

3 cups flour
¾ cup sour milk
pinch of salt
1 egg
1 tsp cream of tartar
2 tsp baking powder
¾ tsp baking soda
3 tbsp heaping of shortening or lard

Directions

Mix all ingredients and shape into flat palm-sized round biscuits. Bake six at a time on lightly greased pan.
