This recipe also makes fantastic cupcakes!
The chocolate cake is lovely and dense.
I grew up eating Nana’s baking so I prefer dense cakes – if you like cake-box cakes you will probably not like this recipe as it is not light or airy.
Chocolate Cake
- ½ cup margarine
- 2 eggs
- 6 tbsp cocoa & hot water
- 1 cup sour milk
- 2 cups flour
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¾ tsp soda
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Put cocoa in bowl and mix in hot water. You need to add just enough hot water to dissolve the cocoa – let cool.
- Cream margarine and sugar together and then beat in eggs. Add the cocoa and mix to combine. Add the dry ingredients, then the sour milk and vanilla. Stir to combine all ingredients.
- Pour into prepared round cake pans (1/2 full) or cupcake tray.
- Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.
Tip: How we prepare our cake pans – cut a piece of parchment paper to the same size as the base of the cake pan and then dust lightly with flour. For the cupcakes we use cupcake liners.
