My Nana was born in Wales in 1921. She immigrated to Timmins, Ontario in the late 1920s with her mother and 2 siblings. Her father had gone ahead of them and was working in the Gold Mine in Timmins. This scones recipe was Nana’s mother’s mother’s recipe.
You can see Grandma Mary Aston in this photo with her family. This photo was taken in 1912 and Nana’s mom, Nellie, is in back row on the far right.
Grandma Aston’s Drop Scones Recipe
Welsh Recipe, from 1898.
Ingredients
1 cup of self rise flour (or 1 tsp of baking powder in 1 cup flour)
1 cup of milk
1 egg
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
salt
Directions
Beat the egg well with the sugar; add milk. Mix the baking soda and cream of tartar well with the flour and gradually work in the liquids. Heat the bake-stone and grease well with lard (shortening). Drop the batter from spoon and turn over as soon as bubbles begin to rise. Cook scones quickly and put on a cloth. Cover with another cloth to keep steam in and keeps scones soft. Serve spread with butter and preserves jam.
Note: Try making these on a Cast Iron Frying Pan.
