This homemade marshmallows recipe is circa 1898 and it was handed down from Grandma Mary Hannah Aston (nee Pugsley) to her daughter Harriet Hunt (nee Aston) and then to my Nana (Eileen). Mary Hannah lived in Pontycymmer, Wales. You can see her in the following family photo they had taken for their Christmas Card in 1912, in the center holding the baby. Harriet is in the top right, back row.

Grandma Aston’s Marshmallows Recipe

Ingredients

½ cup of water
½ cup sugar
1 rounded tsp gelatin
few drops vanilla

Directions

Mix the water, sugar and gelatin in a saucepan and allow to come to a boil. Let boil 5 minutes. Cool and when it begins to thicken add the vanilla and colouring (if wanted). Beat until fluffy and thick.
